Ever do a signing with an old player like this? Takes hours just to do 72 baseballs with inscriptions. Koufax I am sure is getting the lions share of the proceeds to even get his attention.
Well I hate to be a downer.... but perhaps like Bill Russell (Celtics not Dodgers) he knows his value because of his lack of signing throughout the years. He might be at a point in his life maybe he has medical bills for himself or maybe even a family member and needs the help or perhaps he knows he won't be around much longer himself and wants to leave some sort of financial blanket for his loved ones. Maybe his grandchildren need help with college tuition we never know.
A few years ago, Lou Brock passed as many of you know and after he passed away his wife sold his collection of things he collected through the years for himself. Regretfully, I was unable to go to his estate sale because of work issues and I remember a friend of mine went and on the final day they were basically giving away items of little value, like a lanyard with his name on it from the All-Star game in 2008 or something from Cooperstown with an event he attended like a nameplate. Bob Gibson did something very similar to this right before he passed away as well (which of course I missed also). My biggest regret not going to Lou's was he had a ton of Rickey Henderson stuff that Rickey had signed to him, Some of it for going as little as $50-$100 each and these were the crumbs left behind on the final day as my friend reported. Now that Rickey is gone too I wish I would have taken off work for just 1 day to look at Lou's stuff and bought something, anything.
