How do player appearances work?

One of my friends has opened a sports shop here in CT and Im wondering what he needs to do to get athletes to do appearances at his store.
I know theres fees..ect but where do I look for that type of info.

Do I just contact whomevers media relations dept?
And since its close to Uconn..anyone know what any rules are about college athletes.

Meet a player at local game and ask if they are interested in doing a signing. Try to keep the agent out of it. If players tells you to talk to an agent, you know your friend being a start up business will not be able to afford.

If it is a retired player you are looking for shoot him/her a note and explain the signing. This should work a lot smoother.

Having done a bunch of signings...make sure you have a back up plan if the athlete does not show. That happens all too often. That would kill a new business. A lot of players want cash up front.

College players cannot do signings while in school it is against NCAA rules to take money of any kind while playing a sport.

College players CAN do signings. They just cannot profit from it. Might want to call the school and you might be able to arrange something with a donation. As for players you might want to write them explaining that you have a store and you would be interestd in having a signing. I would look for a local guy like Carl Pavano or Rob Dibble when he is in town. You might also want to contact the local minor league team, not sure what part of the state you are in but there are 4 teams in state.
