Pedro Alvarez

Anyone heard much about him? I know he was the number 2 overall pick in the 2008 draft and that he was a very good player for Vanderbilt.

What type of player is he actually expected to be?

Has anyone seen any scouting reports on him? I hear he is supposed to be something special, but I haven't really seen much to back that up.

What have you all heard about him?

Hitting Ability: About as safe a bet as there is, Alvarez is a polished and poised hitter and should hit for average in the big leagues.
Power: He's got power now and should have at least average power in the future.
Running Speed: He's got below-average speed.
Base running: Base running is not really a key part of his game.
Arm Strength: He's got an average arm at third.
Fielding: He should be OK to stay at third. If needed, he'd probably make a pretty good first baseman.
Range: He has average range.
Physical Description: Alvarez is a pretty big and strong left-handed hitting third baseman who plays with a bounce in his step.
Medical Update: A broken hamate bone forced him out of action for more than a month. The power has been slow to come back, but he's healthy.
Strengths: Hitting ability, power, high-energy effort on the field.
Weaknesses: Some lingering concern about him getting back to full strength following the injury.
Summary: Alvarez entered the season as the top player, talent-wise, in the Draft, and even though he missed a chunk of the season after suffering a broken hamate bone in his right hand, his status hasn't suffered. While his timing and strength have been slow in fully returning, most are confident it will and point to a long track record of success for Alvarez. The only thing that could affect his status on Draft day are perceived bonus demands, but it's unlikely they will force any huge slide out of the first several picks.
