Cameron Maybin hype slipping

I don't know if its just me or is the hype on Cameron down from last year. Everyone was pumped on this guy last year and it seems to be down and quieter from last year. anyone know why?

.265 BA and 1 KO every 3 AB's may be the reason.

1 bad year doesn't mean you won't ever be good......... there is a reason they put him in AA, he needed to work on certain aspects of his approach at the plate. I agree with cubsphil also because he is smart on the bases and is lightning fast

yeah, don't count him out yet. He was a raw talent when he came into baseball - that doesn't pan out overnight. He's just 22 and his numbers aren't bad.

One thing I've noticed over several trips to Zebulon, his work ethic doesn't seem all that great. Maybe he's a beast in the weight room, who knows, but he's almost always the last guy to get there pre-game and the first to leave post-game. During BP, he does next to nothing in terms of working and getting ready for the game. Strikes me as the kind of kid who has always been so much better than his competition, that he doesn't understand the work that goes into it. Raw talent will get you so far, but to be successful at AA or above, you have to dedicate yourself to the game.

I totally agree! He WAS always better than his competition. In high school he was a beast batting around .650. But that was in North Carolina's High School league which is notorious for not putting out baseball players like Texas and California. (There are exceptions Hamilton, Roberts, others)

Well I just got him on an OMLB ss here in Mississippi. He was shagging fly balls in the outfield with his teammates (in full uniform) even though he is on the DL. He was very pleasant and talked with me about his injury, saying right now he can't even pick up a bat. He struck me as a very good kid and was one of the first ones on the field to shag flies and one of the first back onto the field before the game. He's only 21 and he is still having a fairly good season so far. Lets not forget he was voted to the SL allstar team. He's stolen 17 bases, hit 12 hrs and played good defense and the batting avg. is coming around also. Jeff Francouer was having an even worse season when he was first in AA and when he got called up he tore up the league for the rest of the year. I once heard that some guys actually hit better as they move up the minor leagues. Something about seeing a better quality of pitches and more strikes. So long story short, don't give up on him yet. Remember Roy Halladay struggled and had to be sent back to A ball and now look at him. Talent almost always rises to the occasion.

His numbers are solid across the board and maybe it is better for him just to be able to play and fly under the radar, as opposed to a guy who is hyped from week to week as a top prospect.

He has struck out 99 times in 306 at-bats, but his on-base percentage is still around .360, even with his batting average hovering at the .265 mark.

What is probably impressive is his athleticism: 55 runs scored, 17 steals and six triples to go with 12 home runs and 12 doubles.

By the sound of things, you'd think he was hitting .202 and showing no 'baseball aptitude' whatsoever.

What posts are you guys reading? Nobody said the kid wasn't good, or would not ever be a major leaguer. I pointed out his work ethic seemed lax, and that was based on what I observed the times I personally saw him. Saying he takes a slacker approach at times and saying he is a total bust are completely different things.

I am just pointing out that this guy made some big jumps last year and it seemed like everyone wanted his autograph and people still do. It just seems people are toning it down since he got traded to Florida. Just my thought.

I saw him in Lakeland last year and the ball just jumped off his bat. He was also a great guy and signed quite a bit. Really liked him and cheered him on when he was in the majors.

I was talking to one of his showcase coaches here in NC and he said Maybin was a kid who went off of raw talent. He once hit a shot and he thought he hit it out, he started jogging to first and when he got to first he saw it bounce off the wall. He then turned on the jets and still made it to third!
