I think they will go with Tim Beckham. I think that having longoria will play a factor in deciding who to take

I figure that Tampa will take another pitcher, but you never know. Alvarez is hard to pass up...

I've heard the Alvarez's draft stock has slipped a bit this season. Bekham from GA is good.

Here is how the draft should go if teams factor in price while at the same time while considering needs and ability:

1. Tampa Bay Rays - Tim Beckham SS
2. Pittsburgh Pirates- Pedro Alvarez Vandy 3rd
3. Kansas City Royals- Aaron Crow Missouri P
4. Baltimore Orioles- Brian Matusz San Diego
5. San Francisco Giants- Jemile Weeks 2nd Miami
6. Florida Marlins- Buster Posey C FSU
7. Cincinnati Reds- Gerrit Cole RHP Santa Ana, CA
8. Chicago White Sox- Gordon Beckham 2nd Georgia
9. Washington Nationals- Kyle Skipworth C Riverside, CA
10. Houston Astros- Justin Smoak USC 1st

Why I feel some players will drop:

Vanderbilt thirdbaseman Pedro Alveraz, who is considered a top pick in 2008, is being represented by Scott Boras.

7 million dollar bonus for Florida high school 1st baseman Eric Hosmer.

Rays could go with Crow, Matusz, or Beckham 1st. But Buster Posey's draft stock is going up and the Rays need catching.

No way I think that Jemile Weeks will go that high. He is probably the 3rd best prospect on his team. Alonso and Raben should be off the board before him, but all 3 should still be 1st round picks.

I could possible also see Shooter Hunt from Tulane and/or Christian Friedrich from Eastern Kentucky possibly going in the Top 15.

I wouldn't be all that suprised to see the Rays pondering taking Gordon Beckham. Only snag is that he has a cocky attitude and I dont see the Rays flirting with clubhouse cancers in the near future. Gordon would be a perfect fit for the White Sox that allow ego's and they also need to get more athletic. The Giants will go cheap in the 1st round and then draft players that are flirting with attending college in the later rounds and overpay for those services. Think of the Rays with Dj Jones which was a pre-planned signing. If they don't sign, they will gladly take the compensation picks for the next year. Pirates and Astros just need college bats and can worry about where they can play on the field 2 years later.

I would be thrilled if Buster Posey was signed by my hometown team, especially because we attend the same college.

I like your Summer Ball blog. Especially your post on Peter Burg - Summer Ball: Burg Signs With Rochester

Peter is a former teammate of mine who has been at Valpo the last couple years and since has transferred to Scholastica. Nice to see that !!

----------

Back to the draft...I don't see Smoak going anywhere above #5, but it all depends on what teams do. Teams should take the best player available, and not base it on needs.

I.E. - Alex Gordon and Billy Butler to the Royals

Thanks. I am originally from Racine, WI, so I try to show some love for the Midwestern guys.

Smoak is good, a first rounder, but not in the top 10. From what I've read, Buster Posey is the real deal.
