Question about a Griffey Jr. Minor League card

Is there a price guide for graded minor league cards? I have a 1988 Minor League card of Ken Griffey Jr. with the San Bernardino Spirit and was wondering what it might be worth graded. The card number is 34.

Be careful with Griffey Minor league cards. They were all printed on cheap card stock and counterfeits are out there in droves. I have heard of a few people who bought them from a reputable dealer in 1989 or 1990 and sent them in recently to get them graded only to have them come back as ungradeable because they were counterfeit. You can pay to get it graded, but it's not going to make it THAT much of a difference. The Griffeys are cool to have nice to see, but not the most desirable of his rookies. As far as price, even the guide don't have a good gauge on these cards. Sales from 5-500 dollars have occured and everywhere in between. Good Luck

I actually didn't buy mine from a dealer. Got it from a pack of cards years ago. Thought it was cool and hung on to it.

It's peak value will be when he gets into the HOF. I don't think grading will do much financially unless you think it can be a 9-10, but even then it will depend on the market.

Well if as many fakes are out there as you guys say, then maybe getting it graded will prove that it is not counterfeit and increase the chances of getting rid of it at optimal value when he does go into the hall. You would think people willing to pay 100-500 would do some homework and be aware that fakes are out there.

If it's from a pack, then it's probably the 1992 Classic Best Card #200 (unless you have the insert). It isn't a true rookie so there isn't much interest or value of the card. Maybe a few dollars but that's it.

A PSA 8 went for $6.50, so it's not really worth much. 1988 Ken Griffey Jr. #34 PSA 8 San Bernardino Spirit - eBay (item 290454329402 end time Jul-19-10 12:16:26 PDT)

What pack did you get the card out of?

I honestly have no idea what pack it came out of. All I can remember about it is seeing packs of minor league cards for sale when I was a kid and thought I'd be cool to have some. So, I bought a pack and this card happened to be in it. I had put it away in a plastic sleeve and was looking through some other cards I had when I saw it.

The card you posted the link for is very similar to the one I have but the "pose" is different. The actual card I have is the one I provided the link for.

this is the one pose that is real, and there are counterfeits of this pose as well - Get it graded by a REPUTABLE GRADING COMPANY (PSA, Beckett, SGC) so you can prove that it's real.

KEN GRIFFEY, JR 1988 San Bernardino Spirit PSA 9 Rookie - eBay (item 260622065348 end time Aug-17-10 12:56:50 PDT)

Also, I was fairly certain that these were only issued in "team set" form, and not in normal packs... I am looking to see if i can find more info on this

I'd be curious to know. The pack I got it from may have been just packs of players from the team. It does seem like I had some cards from other players on this team.

You are right, bought two sets in 1988 while attending a San Bern Spirit game.
