Article on Autograph Collecting

Tuff Stuff has an article on autograph collecting on their website. As usual, the article gives most of the attention to the negative. Interesting read, though.

Read the article here:

Interesting read. They have DeNiro listed as a very tough auto and I always thought I'd heard he was pretty good to fans.

Autographers are always always always portrayed in a bad light. It really angers me that the guys like most of the ones on this site who are just trying to graph for their own personal collections are drug through the mud in all these articles making us look paparrazi-like. It's ridiculous really.

And we wonder why all the players think all of us are dealers....it is because of articles like this, talking about "chasers" being employed to go wherever to get autographs.

And if you are going to get a quote from a player, get somebody more popular or better than Manny Parra.

You are exactly right. Most players may never read an article like this, but you can bet their agents are reading them, and passing along this kind of information to the players. When my son gets old enough to collect autographs, I would like to be able to take him to the ballpark to get some autographs without players assuming that I am pimping him out to get them for myself to sell. I look forward to this hobby being something that my son and I can share, but stuff like this ruins it for everybody.

I hate that just cause your an older collector, it's right away assumed your just gonna sell the auto. Not that you'd get all that much for it anyway. I mean, I have players all the time ask me if they are going to see this on ebay. I have been taking my camera and showing them my collection so they know it's a permant keeper.

Once again, there's another article that stereotypes adult autograph seekers as dealers. No wonder why we can't live in a perfect society...

All i can say to those who graph in person responding to this article, deal with it.

Nothing you can do to change the perception of what athletes, celebrities and their handlers think of you.

If you cannot accept that reality, do something else with your free time.

Of course we have to deal with it, doesn't mean we have to like it. It is such a shame that Tuff Stuff and SCD have gotten to the point that they are unreadable. This mag was for the collector, now it is just a POS. Why didn't they tell the story about the father and son building their autograph collection together? I know we have a couple of guys here doing that, or about the guy who has been collecting graphs since they were a kid and is now 40 (me in 3 yrs!) and that has never sold a thing? I have no problem with the facts, but there are two sides to every story. It gets people worked up when they write a story about a guy hiring 18 yr old girls with D Cups asking for a graph. TJ Schwartz is one of the POS dealers who thinks his SDS. Him and his washed up child star son who wound up doing a porn. Where was that in the story? Report both sides of the story, that is all I ask

I get the point of the article. There is just nothing you can do but to move on and continue to graph if you choose.
